Class 10 Science Chapter 8: Heredity

Chapter 8 of the NCERT Class 10 Science textbook “Science”.

Chapter at a glance

I assume this chapter follows the usual Class 10 short treatment of heredity (how parents pass traits to offspring) and introduces Mendel's experiments with pea plants. Part 1 explains what traits and heredity mean, why controlled experiments were needed, and how Mendel discovered simple inheritance patterns. We do not yet do Punnett squares or genetic ratios — those come in Part 2. Verify with current textbook/syllabus if any chapter headings differ.

What you will learn: You will learn the meaning of heredity and traits, why experiments must be controlled, and the key observations Mendel made with pea plants.

Why it matters: Heredity explains why children look like their parents and why some useful or harmful features appear again in families. Mendel's method shows how careful experiments reveal simple rules behind complex biology.

Key concepts

  • Heredity and traits — Heredity is passing features from parents to offspring; traits are the forms of a feature.
  • Mendel's experimental method — Mendel used controlled crosses and counted offspring to find inheritance patterns.
  • Mendel's key observation (qualitative) — Some traits appear in F1 while others reappear in F2 — showing dominant and recessive behaviour.

What the chapter covers

  • Try at Home — A safe observation activity to see heredity ideas at work.
  • Why Questions — Short 'why' answers that explain the chapter's reasoning.

Remember for the exam

  • Do not say traits are 'lost' in F1; say they are 'masked' if recessive.
  • Always mention how pollination was controlled in Mendel's experiment.

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Calling a trait 'lost' when it does not appear in F1. Better: Say the trait is 'masked' or 'recessive' in F1 and can reappear in later generations.
  • Mistake: Saying Mendel did random open pollination. Better: State Mendel used controlled pollination to keep parentage certain.
  • Mistake: Using the words 'gene' and 'allele' without explanation. Better: Prefer 'form of a character' (trait) and explain gene/allele only if textbook includes them.
