Class 5 Mathematics Chapter 8: Weight and Capacity

Chapter 8 of the NCERT Class 5 Mathematics textbook “Math Mela”.

Chapter at a glance

This chapter teaches how we measure how heavy things are (weight/mass) and how much a container can hold (capacity). We use small units like grams and millilitres and larger units like kilograms and litres. You will learn the common tools used for these measurements and when to use each unit. Part 1 introduces the basic units and the measuring tools.

What you will learn: You will learn the names of units for mass and capacity, how they relate (simple conversions), and the tools used to measure them.

Why it matters: Knowing units and tools helps you read food packets, measure milk for a recipe, and choose the correct container for liquids.

Key concepts

  • Mass (weight) and its units — Mass tells how heavy something is; we measure it in grams or kilograms.
  • Capacity and its units — Capacity tells how much a container can hold; we use millilitres and litres.

What the chapter covers

  • Think & Guess — A playful challenge to make you think about size and unit choice.

Remember for the exam

  • Write units clearly.
  • Use measuring jug for liquids and balance for mass.

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Measuring a liquid with a weighing balance. Better: Use a measuring jug for liquids and a balance for mass.
