Class 10 Science Chapter 10: The Human Eye and the Colourful World
Chapter 10 of the NCERT Class 10 Science textbook “Science”.
Chapter at a glance
This part explains the structure of the human eye and what each part does. You will learn how the eye collects light and makes a real, inverted image on the retina. The part also explains accommodation — how the eye lens changes shape to focus on near and distant objects. These are the basic ideas you must know before studying defects or colour phenomena.
What you will learn: Names and functions of the main parts of the eye; how an image is formed on the retina; how the eye focuses by changing lens shape (accommodation).
Why it matters: Understanding these makes it easy to learn why people need glasses, how cameras copy the eye, and why some visual problems happen.
Key concepts
- Structure of the human eye — The eye is a roughly spherical organ whose parts work together to focus light and send signals to the brain.
- Image formation on the retina — The eye lens focuses light to form a real, inverted image on the retina.
- Accommodation (focusing for near and far) — Accommodation is the eye changing lens shape to focus on objects at different distances.
What the chapter covers
- Try at Home — A safe visual activity to see how pupil size changes.
- Why Questions — Short reasoning questions with brief answers.
Remember for the exam
- Pupil = opening; Iris = muscle controlling pupil.
- Lens changes shape to focus — this is accommodation.
Common mistakes
- Mistake: Saying the pupil is a muscle that focuses the eye. Better: The iris is a muscle that changes pupil size; accommodation is done by the ciliary muscles acting on the lens.
- Mistake: Claiming the image on retina is virtual and upright. Better: The image on the retina is real and inverted; the brain interprets it as upright.
- Mistake: Saying cornea only protects the eye and does not help focusing. Better: Cornea both protects and contributes significantly to focusing light.
